Jason Scully scored a game high 23 points and added 5 rebounds as the SMUS Blue Jags defeated the Shawnigan Stags Friday evening in their first game at the BC Independent School Championships at West Point Grey Academy in Vancouver. The Blue Jags are looking for the three-peat, after having won the tournament the past two years.

After back-and-forth action for the majority of the first quarter, SMUS pulled away late in the frame taking a 21-9 lead. Scully led all players with 9 points and 3 rebounds through one quarter of play.

The Blue Jags started the second period slowly shooting the ball, but good aggressive defense kept the Stags to only 5 points. At half time the score was 32-14 for SMUS, with Scully posting 10 points and Jake Wilmott adding 9 as well as 5 steals and 4 rebounds.

SMUS added to the lead in the third quarter, taking a 30 point advantage into the final frame thanks to a late and-one from Scully. The Jags coasted through the fourth quarter, keeping their 30 point cushion for a final score of 64-34. The Blue Jags defense was once again the story, as they totaled an impressive 22 steals in the game.

Aside from Scully's 23 point performance, Wilmott finished with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Meanwhile, Max Pollen chipped in 12 points and 3 steals. For Shawnigan it was Mostyn Findlay leading the way with 9 points.

Arguably the most complete performance of the game came from Matty McColl who led the Jags in rebounds and assists on the night, with 8 and 4 respectively. "I knew it was going to be a challenge matching up with [the Stags'] big men so I fought hard and I'm just happy to be able to contribute to a great team effort.", said McColl after the game.

With the win, the Blue Jags are into the semi-finals and will play St. Georges at 10:45 AM Saturday morning. This should be a tight matchup between two top teams with a berth in the ISA final at stake.
